At any given time, our Restoration Team works on several projects simultaneously. For historical and archival purposes, our HIW photographer diligently takes pictures during the restoration and documents the various processes each machine is being put through. We have compiled the photos in a photo gallery for each machine. We hope you enjoy them.

George Clymer arrived in England in 1817 and successfully manufactured and marketed his his invention from a factory in London. As time went on, there were various company changes. Clymer took a partner in Samuel Dixon to form Clymer & Dixon, then on his passing in 1834, subsequent further changes (1845) with the new name of Clymer Dixon & Co.
By 1851, William Carpenter, an employee, purchased the company but this is also the beginning of the end of exclusivity as patents expired and many more firms were busy making copies of George Clymer’s Columbian. Although the research on the actual age and serial number of this press is still on-going, the information available to date places our Columbian press in the time period between 1845 and 1851.
Featured here is the restoration of the Wm. Carpenter Columbian Press.
