At any given time, our Restoration Team works on several projects simultaneously. For historical and archival purposes, our HIW photographer diligently takes pictures during the restoration and documents the various processes each machine is being put through. The St. Louis Type Foundry began making type by hand in 1840. During the rest of the century, they would compete directly with cross-town rivals the Central Type Foundry. In 1896, both merged and then eventually were amalgamated with the mighty ATF (American Type Founders). Our press is a Washington style and one that shares all the key attributes of Rust and Hoe’s figure 4 toggle action. This St. louis Type Foundry press is a part of the Watkins Collection which we had recently acquired from the Watkins Family, of Logan, Utah. The HIW Restoration team takes a lot of pride in restoring this press. The press decorations were hand-painted by our paint artist to match the original design. Leo, St. Louis' project leader, is exceptionally proud of his accomplishment - and as an acknowledgement of a job well done, we painted his initials on the press. Excellent work, Leo!
